The Temple of Caracol

This typical spiral-shaped temple (caracol in Spanish) came back to life in 2010, when excavations began at this archaeological site.

Once again, Heinz Plenge has something very interesting to tell through his shots about this place and the people who live near it:

The spiral is a symbol of life, and this temple shows how ceremonial architecture serves to convey a specific experience. The first photograph was taken by Heinz during the day. The second photograph was instead taken at night, with the help of a local who re-traced the spiral of the temple, as if wanting to recall the rites that were once held in the temple itself. The two shots are closely linked: life and death, day and night, water and fire; opposite elements that animate this special place through the art of the photographer.
